Have fun as you continue to understand and speak Spanish in a range of practical everyday situations, immersing yourself in the culture of Spain and Latin America along the way.

In order to avoid disappointment, it is advisable to enrol at least 2 ½ weeks prior to the course starting. We will confirm course information two weeks prior to the start date.

This course is a continuation from your Spanish beginners A course or it is the start point if you are a confident but rusty beginner. The emphasis of the course will be on you developing your speaking and listening skills with some focus on reading and writing. You will be introduced to some grammatical aspects such as the present tense embedded into the teaching and learning of the topics. The topics studied depend upon the needs and interests of the group as a whole but may include shopping for food and drink, restaurant, telling the time, buying travel tickets, booking holiday accommodation, describing the weather and describing yourself and family. Depending on the topics chosen by the group, by the end of the course you will be able to:

1 Buy some food & drink and/or clothes (including quantity and colours)

2 Order a starter, main and dessert in a restaurant

3 Buy tickets for plane/bus/train (specifying date, time and class) and understand basic travel information such as timetables and travel announcements

4 Book holiday accommodation (including dates, type of room and facilities)

5 Describe the weather in simple terms and comprehend the key points of a simple weather forecast

6 Describe yourself and family including number of people, names, ages, professions and physical descriptions

Please note there will be no teaching sessions on 12/02/2024, 01/04/2024, 08/04/2024, 15/04/2024, 06/05/2024 and 27/05/2024.

There are vending machines available where hot/cold drinks and snacks can be purchased. To reduce the use of single-use plastic water bottles/cups, there are watercoolers on site making it easy to refill your water bottle.

Should the Campus car park be full, please use Marriotts Walk or Woodford Way Car Parks which are a few minutes’ walk away.

Please report to Reception on arrival. A photo-id will be issued, for you to wear when you attend classes.

Entry criteria
There are no formal entry requirements. This is a course for those who have already studied the language for about 20 hours or have picked up a little on holidays or business trips.

Courses can fill fast, so please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Decisions on whether a course is to run are made two weeks prior to the start date - an email will be sent to you should there be changes to your course or if it is cancelled. Please check your inbox leading up to your course, including the junk folders. For anyone without an email account, our Admissions team will phone you instead.

For the first week of the course you will need to bring a valid form of identification; this includes passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2023 prior to starting the course.

Fee information
A text book is used to accompany the course but it is optional to buy this (average cost £20 - £25). You may also like to buy a small dictionary. Your tutor will be able to advise you at the first session.

Courses offered by the college are fully or partly funded by the Government and the published fee takes account of this funding.

Before starting a course, the College is required to check you meet conditions relating to that funding, e.g. age, residency status within the UK/EEA, prior qualification level and employment status. In some circumstances (such as with online enrolments), these checks can only be completed after you have enrolled and paid.

If you are unable to pay in full for this course at the time of enrolment, and the course tuition fee is £300 or more, an instalment plan is available. If this is your preference, please do not enrol online but rather call the Admissions Team on 01235 216400 to enrol.

Once enrolled, Admissions will take the first instalment payment from you and pass on your details to the Finance team who will email you to set-up your payment plan. Please return a fully completed instalment plan to Finance as failure to do so could result in being withdrawn from your course.

The rules on fee reduction are complicated, we would encourage you to talk to our Admissions Team on 01235 216400 to discuss these options. You can find more information on our Fees and Bursaries page - search "Fees and Bursaries" at the top of the page.

Qualifications received
As this is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification. However, you will be asked to complete activities that demonstrate how you are progressing on your course.
Learning & method assessment
You will listen to the spoken word, practise speaking, watch video clips, play games, read simple texts and write short texts. Learning activities will include individual, pair, small group and whole class work using the most up-to-date teaching methods and a wide range of activities and resources adapted to different styles of learning. There is no examination.

As this is a non-accredited course, informal methods of assessment will be used. You will be required to complete a RARPA form which represents Recognising and Recording your Progress and Achievement.

If you are to gain maximum benefit and enjoyment from your language class, it will be useful to spend some time working between sessions. There will usually be a small amount of homework set each week (up to an hour’s work) which could include interactive activities from websites, watching video clips, reading, writing or grammatical activities. When homework is not set, it is still a good idea to spend about that amount of time going over what has been done in class.
