Abingdon CampusThis workshop will develop your knowledge and understanding to enable you to check and maintain your bicycle and fix the most common problems that arise to keep you safe when cycling.
The workshop is aimed at beginners and offers a hands-on introduction to basic bicycle maintenance. You do not need expert knowledge on bike maintenance to complete many cycle repairs. The tutor will take you through each process step by step with lots of opportunities to ask questions along the way. The workshop will be hands-on, so please wear appropriate clothing as you may get dirty.
You will need to bring your bicycle with you, together with your bicycle repair kit, which needs to include the following:
Side cutters / puncture repair kit and pump / tyre levers (if not part of puncture repair kit) / adjustable spanner / set of Allen keys / crosshead screwdriver / pliers / rag
Please bring a maintenance stand if you have one.
There may be miscellaneous items that can be purchased on the day, maximum £10.
The course will cover the following areas of bike maintenance:
• Replacing a punctured inner tube and repair a puncture.
• Checking wheels and tyres
• How to check and adjust brakes
• How to adjust gears and fix common gear issues
It will also provide roadside repair tips to get you home safely should anything go wrong whilst you are out riding.
This course WILL NOT cover any type of drum brake or hub gears.
Course Outcomes
You will be able to:
Undertake safety checks of your bicycle.
Perform basic maintenance and repairs to your bicycle.
To avoid disappointment, it is advisable to enrol at least 2 ½ weeks prior to the course starting. We will confirm course information two weeks prior to the start date.

Courses can fill fast, so please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Decisions on whether a course is to run are made two weeks prior to the start date - an email will be sent to you should there be changes to your course or if it is cancelled. For the first week of the course you will need to bring a valid form of identification; this includes passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.
Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2023 prior to starting the course.
Please bring £10:00 to cover miscellaneous item costs necessary for this short course.
Courses offered by the college are fully or partly funded by the Government and the published fee takes account of this funding.
Before starting a course, the College is required to check you meet conditions relating to that funding, e.g. age, residency status within the UK/EEA, prior qualification level and employment status. In some circumstances (such as with online enrolments), these checks can only be completed after you have enrolled and paid.
If you are unable to pay in full for this course at the time of enrolment, and the course tuition fee is £300 or more, an instalment plan is available. If this is your preference, please do not enrol online but rather call the Admissions Team on 01235 216400 to enrol.
Once enrolled, Admissions will take the first instalment payment from you and pass on your details to the Finance team who will email you to set-up your payment plan. Please return a fully completed instalment plan to Finance as failure to do so could result in being withdrawn from your course.

This is a non-accredited workshop.
As this is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification. However, you will be asked to complete activities that demonstrate how you are progressing on your course.
The tutor will provide a demonstration followed by learner participation and experimentation. The tutor will offer one-to-one support throughout the course and provide feedback.
As this is a non-accredited workshop, there is no formal qualification. However, you will be required to measure your progress by completing a RARPA form which represents the Recognition and Recording of your Progress and Achievement.
