This course focuses on picture composition and critique of pictures submitted by participants. The work of famous photographers is also covered, and two practical sessions will help you think and work in new ways.
This course is aimed at those who have completed ‘How the camera works’ or are already able to operate their cameras fully and are familiar with the Exposure Triangle, semi-automatic settings, depth of field etc.

Finding a subject and then being able to compose an interesting image is the real challenge of photography. During the course you will: • Learn how ‘to see’ a photograph in a variety of settings. • Basic processing of RAW files and Photoshop techniques to get the best from your image.• File and complete your picture. • Outline steps of publishing your own photo-book and the tutor will publish a book of everyone’s pictures as a group project.• Notes covering the content of each session are emailed out so you can build up a complete reference of everything covered. By the end of the course you will have had the opportunity to: • Understand what makes a good photograph.• Process and edit your photographs using basic techniques.• Submit work to a group project photobook.

In addition to eight classroom sessions there will be two 3hr week-end practical sessions 10am-1pm - further details of location and dates during the course.

In order to avoid disappointment, it is advisable to enrol at least 2½ weeks prior to the course starting. We will confirm course information two weeks prior to the start date. Please note there will be no session on 17/02/25.

Abingdon and Witney College is subject to Ofsted regulation and is required to work with all its students to make sure they understand Government initiatives around Safeguarding, Prevent and Fundamental British Values. Information on these matters will be shared with you during your course.

You will also be asked to complete monitoring paperwork, which helps us to deliver course content to the highest quality.

What next?
After completing this course you will understand how to make pictures of interesting things in ordinary places, so the follow on course addresses your personal development in “Photo Club”. This includes a deeper look at composition and opportunities to personally undertake basic picture processing using Photoshop, to complete your pictures, or you could progress onto Stage 3 photography course.

Fee information
Courses offered by the college are fully or partly funded by the Government and the published fee takes account of this funding.

Before starting a course, the College is required to check you meet conditions relating to that funding, e.g. age, residency status within the UK/EEA, prior qualification level and employment status. In some circumstances (such as with online enrolments), these checks can only be completed after you have enrolled and paid.

If you are unable to pay in full for this course at the time of enrolment, and the course tuition fee is £300 or more, an instalment plan is available. If this is your preference, please do not enrol online but rather call the Admissions Team on 01235 216400 to enrol.

Once enrolled, Admissions will take the first instalment payment from you and pass on your details to the Finance team who will email you to set-up your payment plan. Please return a fully completed instalment plan to Finance as failure to do so could result in being withdrawn from your course.

The rules on fee reduction are complicated, we would encourage you to talk to our Admissions Team on 01235 216400 to discuss these options. You can find more information on our Fees and Bursaries page - search "Fees and Bursaries" at the top of the page.
