Following on from your previous learning you will continue to understand and make yourself understood in a range of increasingly unpredictable everyday situations and begin to express your opinion. The focus of this course will be mainly on speaking and listening. The course will include writing short paragraphs in Pinyin, developing further basic skills in reading and writing Chinese characters.

Enrolment numbers to our courses are reviewed regularly. To avoid disappointment it is advised to enrol early. Courses with low enrolment numbers two weeks prior to the course start date are at risk of getting cancelled

Course Content

You will expand your learning giving emphasis to about 100 new vocabularies around the topics below within the context of pinyin and meaning. This will enable you to communicate in a range of reality life situations: at work, in school, in a gym, on the phone, in the supermarket, in the hospital, in a restaurant or café, at home or at various social occasions.

Plan for a weekend, for a holiday: where to go, how to travel and what to pack.

Talking about a picture: introduce who they are and what they were doing

Describe a person’s appearance and personality.

Health topics: illness, chemist and hospital, doing what is good for your health

The course will equip students with some knowledge on radicals for better understanding of the Chinese characters, with grammar structures for more fluent conversation and for writing simple texts on learned topics.

We will also introduce some culture/traditions alongside the Chinese festivals, and some common sayings and taboos.

Please note there will be no sessions on 24/10/23,12/12/23,19/12/23, 26/12/23, 02/01/24, 13/02/24, 02/04/24, 09/04/24 and 28/05/24

Entry criteria
There are no formal qualifications for entry however it would be ideal if you have completed years 1 and 2 (beginners and improvers) with us or studied the language for at least 120 hours previously.

Courses can fill fast, so please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Decisions on whether a course is to run are made two weeks prior to the start date - an email will be sent to you should there be changes to your course or if it is cancelled. Please check your inbox leading up to your course, including the junk folders. For anyone without an email account, our Admissions team will phone you instead.

For the first week of the course you will need to bring a valid form of identification; this includes passport, driving licence, debit/credit card, Birth Certificate or National Insurance card.

Please note - you should be 19 years old or over at 31st August 2023 prior to starting the course.

A text book is used to accompany the course but it is optional to buy this (average cost £20 - £25).

The text book will support your learning for at least 1 year. You may also like to buy a small

dictionary. Your tutor will be able to advise you at the first session.

Courses offered by the college are fully or partly funded by the Government and the published fee

takes account of this funding. As a result of this if after the first week of this course commencing

the number of learners attending is significantly below the expected number of attendees based

on the initial enrolment figures the college retains the right to cancel the course and offer a place

on a further course of similar nature or a full refund of fees paid.

Before starting a course, the College is required to check you meet conditions relating to that

funding, e.g. age, residency status within the UK/EEA, prior qualification level and employment

status. In some circumstances (such as with online enrolments), these checks can only be

Qualifications received
As this is a non-accredited course, there is no formal qualification. However, you will be asked to complete activities that demonstrate how you are progressing on your course.
Learning & method assessment
You will practise all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), with the emphasis on the spoken language. Learning activities will include individual, pair, small group and whole class work. You will listen to the spoken word, practise speaking, play games, read simple texts, perform role plays, watch film clips and write short phrases. This is a non-accredited course so there will be no formal examination. However, your tutor will ask you to complete informal assessment exercises and will give you feedback.
